Kiel Holder's Top Tips for Moving House with Pets in Reading

Moving House with Pets: How to Keep Tails Wagging and Whiskers Calm By Kiel Holder, Independent Estate Agent in Reading – Avocado Property

Moving house is one of life’s big stressors – and it’s not just people who feel it. Pets can become unsettled, anxious, or even poorly if they’re not considered properly during a move. As a pet-loving estate agent (and dog dad myself), here are my tried-and-tested tips to help make the transition smoother for both you and your furry companions.

🐾 1.

Update Microchip and ID Tags Early

Before moving day, make sure your pet’s microchip details are up to date with your new address and phone number. If they wear a collar, update the tag too. Pets sometimes bolt in new environments – you want them easily returned if that happens.

🐶 2.

Keep Their Routine As Normal As Possible

Feed, walk, and interact with them at the same times you normally would, even if you’re up to your elbows in packing tape. Pets thrive on routine, and keeping it consistent gives them a sense of stability.

📦 3.

Create a Pet ‘Safe Zone’ on Moving Day

Designate one quiet room where your pet can stay during the move – ideally at a friend’s or family member’s house, or the quietest space in your current home. Give them familiar toys, bedding, water, and food. Clearly mark the door so movers know not to disturb them.

🛻 4.

Plan Their Journey Carefully

For dogs and cats, use a secure pet carrier in the car, and don’t feed them right before the trip to avoid travel sickness. Try to bring someone with you who can help comfort them during the journey, especially if it’s a longer move.

🏡 5.

Settle Them In Slowly at the New Place

Start by introducing them to one room with their familiar things — bedding, toys, bowls — before letting them explore more of the home. Avoid having visitors over for a few days so they can adjust calmly to the new environment.

🌳 6.

Stick With Them Outdoors (at First)

In a new garden or area, always supervise dogs closely and keep cats indoors for at least 2–3 weeks. This helps prevent them from trying to return to your old home or becoming disoriented.

🐾 Final Thoughts

Whether you’ve got a boisterous Labrador or a nervous tabby, planning ahead makes all the difference. Moving with pets can be smooth with the right prep — and your home will feel like home quicker when they’re comfortable, too.

If you’re planning a move in Reading or the surrounding areas, I’d be happy to help guide not just your property journey — but your pet’s too. Drop me a message and let’s talk about how to make the move as stress-free as possible for the whole family.

If you’ve been thinking about selling your home but haven’t yet listed it, you’re in a very common crisis!

If you’re Googling any of these right now: “Why am I getting viewings but no offers?” “What does buyer feedback really mean?” “Is my house overpriced or just badly marketed?” You’re not alone, and you’re right to ask. Because when buyers are walking in, nodding politely… and then vanishing or worse giving 'naff' offers, something’s misaligned.

The question you should be asking is: “Why do I want to move?”

No one’s going to knock on your door and say, “Today’s the day.” So instead, let’s talk about what really matters: You. And how you feel about selling your home.
